There’s a few hints to get the most of your Gua Sha Tool: — Always make sure you generously apply a face oil before starting, you want the stone to glide not grab at the skin. — Always start by going over your neck first. — Go gently and slow, doing 3-5 strokes over each area. — Hold the stone close to the skin at a 10-15 degree angle (almost flat). — You want to see the area you are moving over go slightly pink but don’t want bruising on the face. — You can use the stone at room temperature, hot (rest in warm water) or cold (put in iced water) - just make sure you don’t exposure it to extreme temperature changes otherwise it can shatter. The use of Bian Stones are said to be the first tools used in acupuncture alongside moxibustion and herbs. Before insertion needles were used often bian stone shaped into flat ‘needles’ would be heated and applied to acupressure points. You can read about the use of bian in The Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor, a Traditional Chinese Medicine Classic which dates back 2,000 years. The stone was formed around 65 million years ago when a meteorite collided with Earth in Shandong, China. Bian stone issues infrared waves at 7-20 microns which are said to be healing to the body (general statement I know, but I am still learning). As for the Agate, I love the colour green so that is why I initially chose it. Agate is said to improve feelings of relaxation and helps bring clarity. It irks me when brands make vague claims that their products are free of ‘toxins’ or ‘chemicals’ etc. Those types of claims are thrown around so much and seem so redundant to me. For example our skin makes over 20 different chemicals - lots of those we can’t pronounce. Synthetic or ‘natural’ - it doesn't matter. From a molecular point of view, they’re still classed as ‘chemicals’. I used to turn my nose up at formulations that had lengthy words or ‘chemicals’ that I couldn’t pronounce too, but since diving into the world of cosmetic chemistry I am beginning to really appreciate that each ingredient does have an important role in a formula. That’s not to say some particular ingredients aren’t harmful but it’s just about awareness. For this reason I really admire brands that educate their audience about ingredients and why they are used, whether that be in beauty or even health professionals teaching body literacy. This is a tricky one because everyone is different so what works for one person may not work for another. A general rule of thumb though is plenty of water (filtered if you can), quality food/nutrients that works for your body, time spent in nature and doing things that light you up and bring you joy in life. It’s cliche but it is true. And of course all the herbs! My favorites are Nettle, Calendula, Motherwort, Gotu kola and Ginger. Personally I love to splash my face with cold water in the morning (or ocean swim if you’re close to the beach) it really does make you look and feel so vital. Simplicity is best, sticking to a small handful of products that you love and work for you. Think about how much your skin needs to adapt when you are (potentially) using a cleanser, toner, moisturiser, serum, oil, SPF, concealer, foundation, bronzer, highlighter, brow liner, mascara, eyeshadow & setting powder all before walking out the door of a morning! It’s a lot of product and no doubt each will have a different pH. I’m not throwing shade at anyone who has this routine, if that’s what makes you feel good - go for it. But for the sake of skin I love to give myself at least two days and nights a week with no product used at all (just water to cleanse). Our skin needs rest too. Another way to look after our skin’s delicate microbial balance is to go gently and stick to (as above) a handful of products that work for you. I can see the temptation to nuke your skin during a breakout - I’ve been there.You want to throw the harshest, the most “Oh this feels uncomfortable/burny/tingly on my skin so it must be working” products on all at once. This can be really damaging to our skin long term. One of my all time favourite recipes for promoting a healthy skin barrier is equal parts unflavoured full fat greek yoghurt (or the contents of 2 probiotic capsules if you’re vegan) and high grade manuka honey (local, raw honey is fine too though). It’s the perfect balance of acids, probiotics, prebiotics and enzymes. It works for all skin and is just as effective as that $200 face mask - promise! I put lavender essential oil in my diffuser before bed (source). — CBD oil: there is mounting evidence that suggests that this refined oil may be beneficial to improve sleep quaility and minimise sleep disturbances (source). — Chamomile tea: this is a traditional treatment for insomnia, chamomile is a mild sedative and inexpensive. (source) — Melatonin: this is an endogenous hormone secreted by the pineal gland and its primary task is to regulate the circadian rhythm. A supplement of this hormone has been shown to be beneficial in irregular sleep patterns such as shift workers (source). — Herbal tonic: if your sleep issues are negatively impacting your day to day life, this is something that can be addressed by a naturopath. Calm is a free app with a collection of white noise options. — clean: if you have the luxury of space, many find it helpful to keep the bedroom just for rest. Try to avoid using the bed to eat, study, work or lounge throughout the day. By prioritising your sleep you are setting yourself up for improved energy, food choices and mental health during the following day. If you are able to establish a regular bed time and waking time your body will appreciate the consistency as irregular sleeping patterns may translate to poorer quality sleep (source). Alcohol is another facet that may need to be confronted, as much as it may feel like a glass of wine can help you to fall asleep, it is actually counterintuitive. Drinking can lessen the extent of REM sleep, the most restorative phase of sleep. To create a more efficient routine, first you must acknowledge your old habits, your lifestyle and your priorities. If you have a habit of using a glass of red wine as a night cap, try to find a suitable replacement. If you work until late into the evenings, try to clear your mornings so you are allowing at least a seven hour window. If you struggle to fall asleep without white noise or distractions like TV, try to find an audiobook, podcast or sleep app that you can play in the background as you fall to sleep. It is also beneficial to look at your daytime habits that can impact sleep, try to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise each day and expose yourself to morning light each day to configure the circadian rhythm. Recent studies have shown a link between blue light exposure before bed and increased instances of insulin resistance, obesity and heart disease (source). Blue light from phones, computers and televisions has also been shown to suppress the secretion of melatonin, the hormone we recently spoke about that regulates the circadian rhythm (source). Not only does melatonin promote sleep, it also plays a vital role as an antioxidant and has been studied for its involvement in tumour and cancer prevention (source). To avoid melatonin disruption reach for a book or screen free activity at least an hour before bed. The technique entails switching between hot and cold water applications in the shower. This practice is best used daily to gradually build up nervous system balance. The phase of hot water causes a dilation in blood vessels, the cold water then causes constriction. My favourite self care practice of all is probably my night time routine, I have just got my hands on some CBD oil from a dear friend, so I take that, set my diffuser on my bed side table and read. I’ve started keeping my phone charger in my living room so that I’m not tempted to check it before I go to sleep. I'm really trying to practice what I preach with sleep hygiene techniques. Tell me more about CBD oil. Why do you take it and what are its key benefits? CBD oil is the refined constituent of Cannabidiol and it has benefits like minimising anxiety, relieving pain, it is neuro-protective and there is some mounting evidence that it may be beneficial for blood sugar management. I personally take it to add a sense of calmness to my evenings. I’ve been using it for a few months and I’ve found it incredibly helpful with my hormone balance. As much as it’s not a pleasant experience it can actually be beneficial to the body to get a seasonal cold or flu each year as a little tune up and to keep our immune processes functioning. Though if you are experiencing prolonged symptoms or recurrent infections this is a sign that your immune response is lacking. I like to utilise functional nutrition as much as possible, so relying heavily on vitamin C (citrus, red capsicum, strawberries) and zinc (pumpkin seeds, oysters, chickpeas) rich foods are important. As well as this, getting just 10-15 minutes of sunshine each day plays a huge role in a healthy immune system. Vitamin D is an underrated nutrient in terms of its importance in immune modulation, bone health, mental health and hormonal balance. What is your favourite nourishing dish to cook on a cold winter's night? My mum has an excellent veggie patch so I love sneaking up to her house to pinch some organic veggies.
